35 Years Ago Today We Beat Victoria

23 June 2025

June the 24th will always be a special day in the hearts of Tasmanian football fans, remembered for our famous State of Origin win over Victoria at North Hobart Oval.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of that memorable triumph, witnessed by a highly parochial crowd of 18,653 that somehow crammed into the tiny suburban venue.

The Tasmanian side, which included a young Brendon Gale, was coached by Robert Shaw and captained by Hawthorn star Darrin Pritchard. Graeme Wright, Doug Barwick, Paul Hudson and Alastair Lynch also pulled on the map, while Victoria was coached by the legendary David Parkin and captained by another Hawthorn champion Gary Ayres. The Big V lineup also included Tony Liberatore, Ross Lyon, Terry Wallace, Damian Monkhorst, and John Longmire – a strange selection given he was actually from New South Wales!

In a game that was relatively close for much of the day, Tasmania piled on eight goals in the last quarter to win by 33 points and send the crowd into raptures.
