Fuelled by AFL Funding, Glenorchy Auskick Takes Off in 2025

A new chapter is unfolding for the proud Glenorchy District Football Club, with fresh momentum building across the northern suburbs.
After navigating a challenging period in recent years, the Magpies are now firmly on the path to a brighter future. Their Auskick and junior programs are set to reach new heights in 2025, fuelled by fresh energy, strong community support, and the inspiration of Tasmania’s AFL dream.
This resurgence has been made possible through increased investment in Tasmanian football from the AFL, combined with growing enthusiasm among young players inspired by the rise of the Tasmania Devils.

Glenorchy has seen a remarkable 128% growth in its Auskick numbers this year, reflecting the strength of community engagement and the renewed focus on junior development, supported directly by AFL Tasmania.
Following the AFL’s landmark $360 million national investment and the launch of the Tasmania Devils, more resources, staff, and programs have been dedicated to growing the game across the state - particularly at the grassroots level.

Glenorchy District Football Club President Peter Barwick said the level of growth and the level of enthusiasm is great for the club.
“AFL Tasmania staff have supported our volunteers and brought new techniques and learnings which have translated into greater engagement with the kids.
“The way that they’ve brought the love of the game and for having some fun with your friends into this program is sensational and no wonder the numbers are so good.”
Barwick said the belief that a Tasmanian team is within reach has buoyed players at all levels.
“To be part of the generation where it is a reality where Tasmania will have a team and stadium and a pathway for these juniors in Auskick to come through and stay in their home state.”

The club’s success is being supported by increased staffing from AFL Tasmania, including the appointment of Chris Ryan to a new Participation Growth role established in late 2024. Ryan is working closely with clubs and centres across the state to grow junior participation and strengthen the foundations of community football.
“A strong Auskick program is essential to the long-term health of any club,” Ryan said.
“The growth we’re seeing at Glenorchy is not only exciting - it’s pivotal to building a sustainable future for football in Tasmania.
“It has been incredibly rewarding working with Glenorchy and seeing just how quickly the club has made progress with their Auskick.
“We work hand in hand with the hard-working volunteers at local footy clubs and our job is to make their lives easier and to lay the foundations to enable programs to be really engaging to grow and thrive.”

The club is also piloting a brand-new transition program, ‘Little Rum’uns’ Junior League, inspired by the excitement surrounding the Tasmania Devils and their cheeky mascot. This local club-based initiative is designed to bridge the gap between Auskick and junior football, making the transition easier and more engaging for young players while also helping clubs plan ahead to establish their next year of Under 8s teams.
“The Tasmania Devils logo is making the eyes of girls and boys light up - we’re seeing the Devils effect take hold in local footy, and the growth ahead of us is set to transform the game here,” Ryan said.
“Little Rum’uns, named in honour of everyone’s favourite mascot, is a great example of the work we can now do with clubs thanks to the increased investment.”
