Tasmania Football Club training and administration facility

The development of a world-class stadium at Macquarie Point, a new training and administration facility and upgrades to UTAS Stadium and Dial Park are all vital ingredients to the progress of our Club as it firmly embeds itself in all regions of Tasmania.

We are really pleased with the announcement on Sunday 7th July, from the Tasmanian government with regards to the Macquarie Point stadium. To see the visual renders of the multi-purpose stadium is a step forward for the development and we are looking forward to seeing more information released over the coming period as the development enters the Project of State Significance process. For more information on what was released, please click HERE.

Another critical piece of infrastructure for our Club is the development of a training and administration facility. We are working hard with a range of stakeholders including the Tasmanian goverment and local councils to progress this development which is an essential part of every AFL/AFLW club.

This training and administration facility will be the first of its kind for Tasmania. It will be our home, the place where our Club will go to work every day. It will be the place that drives our culture, that welcomes our community, and provides our athletes with the facilities they need to succeed on and off the field. It will also - of course - be the place where all 200,000 (nearly) Founding Members of the Club have their name displayed, an important recognition of the Tasmania Devils community that has built this Club.

Nothing, they are the same thing. They are just referred to by different names.

Tasmania Football Club has nominated its current preferred location for the training and administration facility as Rosny Parklands (also known as the former Rosny Golf Course). This would include both ovals and the training and administration centre being located in the Rosny Parklands, former Rosny Golf Course.

This decision would also allow Charles Hand Park to remain untouched, avoid the proposed skate park removal and significantly reduce the number of trees potentially required to be removed.

Tasmania Football Club is currently awaiting results of further detailed site information on its preferred location and two other sites to better understand the suitability of the sites. This includes information from geotechnical, environmental and heritage testing. It is expected that this information will allow the Tasmania Football Club to finalise its site preference.

This site was selected as the preferred location for the Tasmania Football Club training and administration facility following an assessment against a number of criteria.

Further investigative work is currently being undertaken to ensure that the required facility can be developed on that site.

The Department of State Growth engaged SGS Economic and Planning in September 2023 to assess the regional economic impacts generated by the training and administration facility over the course of its construction and operation. The construction is estimated to result in a positive local economic impact of $63.5M and an estimated regional valued added of $19.3M.

SGS Economics concluded that the project would create approximately 250 direct and indirect jobs throughout its construction and operation.

The Club will employ approximately 150 administration and support staff, and approximately 100 players and coaches. Once the facility is operating at full capacity, it is expected that all workers will be present at the facility throughout the course of a normal week, including playing and non-playing staff. These employees will contribute to the local economy by spending money in local cafes, restaurants, supermarkets, childcare, public transport, real estate and entertainment.

Overall, the positive impact that will flow in the economy as a result of club operating expenditures is estimated to be $55M per annum once the facility is operational.

The training and administration facility will be the heart and soul of Tasmania Football Club.

Most AFL club training facilities across the country allow for a level of public access to the main training ground and indoor training area outside of scheduled club use and will have facilities that are accessible to the community.

AFL clubs with two training grounds generally incorporate public access and shared use on the secondary field.

Tasmania Football Club's training and administration facility will be planned and designed to ensure that elite and community use can be achieved.

The ability to further develop community partnerships and programs is a crucial element of the vision for the facility. This approach is consistent with how our Club has acted since inception.

Current Status of Development

The Tasmanian Government

The Club is working with Tasmanian Government as a member of the Project Control Group and Project Steering Committee as the future user/operator of the facility.

In December 2023 the Tasmanian Government announced Rosny Parklands and Charles Hand Park as the preferred site for the training and administration facility. This site was chosen by the Project Steering Committee following an assessment process which was led by Department of State Growth.

At the time, Twin Ovals at Kingborough was also deemed as a suitable and shortlisted site.

The preferred location status of Rosny Parklands and Charles Hand Park is subject to further due diligence investigations to determine the suitability of the site. That detailed due diligence is currently being undertaken by the Tasmanian Government and is also occurring at the Kingborough site. This process is typical of projects of this nature.

Once the due diligence work is completed, the Tasmania Football Club in consultation with the Tasmanian Government, will be able to provide its final position on the preferred site.

The training and administration facility is a critical piece of infrastructure for our Club.

As with all decisions made sing the Club's inception, we are taking the required time with the very best of information to get the location decision right.

The Club maintains its position that Rosny Parklands/former Rosny Golf Course site is our preferred location for this development, and that the detailed due diligence work that is being undertaken is an important step to ensuring that the facility can be developed at that site, again noting that Twin Ovals at Kingborough was also determined as a suitable and shortlisted site.

The Club is working with the Tasmanian Government to have all of the required information to finalise our position as soon as practical, noting some of this work is technical in nature and takes time.

The Club will take the required time needed to ensure we have the best information to base our decision on.
